Effectively recruit the best candidates for Umzi Wethu enrollment, addressing the needs of stakeholders

The Umzi Wethu selection process is designed to discover and develop local, vulnerable young people who display resilience and motivation despite their circumstances. Between 60 and 100 applications are considered for each intake of between 15 and 20 students. The selection process is made up of a number of phases including: screening, interviews and selection trails before a shortlist is created. Shortlisted candidates must undergo a range of academic, health and other screenings before a final group of students is selected.

Wilderness Foundation’s Imbewu wilderness trails serve as an important stage of the selection process. Umzi Wethu candidates are taken on three-day wilderness trail in Kabouga, a section of Addo Elephant Park. At night they sleep outside under the stars and each take turns being responsible for camp safety. Emotional maturity, determination and leadership qualities are characteristics that emerge in surprising ways on trail.

"The selection trail was good because it put the mindset to you to know exactly what is expected and what you are going to do in the workplace"

"The selection trail was a tremendous adventure; I enjoyed it from day one until the end. It was my first time to do hiking and I learnt about many types of trees and animals. I enjoyed it!"

"The selection trail was the greatest experience I’ve ever had; to sleep outdoors it was a bit strange. The solitaire and night watch were fun to me."
